Clinical Training in Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy

N.B. All applicants to the clinical training must have completed a recognised course of study in Psychoanalytic Observational Studies.

The clinical training offered by NSCAP is funded by the NHS. The students undergo a rigorous training that includes teaching, supervision, personal psychoanalysis and a four-year clinical placement in a CAMHS service in one of the NHS Trusts in the region. The programme enables students to develop the clinical expertise and research skills needed to prepare them for practice as a professional Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist, eligible for membership of the Association of Child Psychotherapists. The course provides an academic as well as a professional qualification. Trainees are registered for the postgraduate degree of Doctor of Child Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy through the Tavistock Clinic and University of East London.

Child and adolescent psychotherapy is a graduate entry profession. The pre-clinical training lays the foundations for clinical work and also facilitates access to the training for non-graduate applicants through offering the possibility of completing a Masters degree. It also provides an opportunity for assessment of personal suitability for working in psychotherapy with children and young people.

Child Psychotherapy trainees must have substantial prior experience of working with children and adolescents. This experience may have been gained in a wide range of settings, including health, education and social care.
